Biography
TEYJAH MCAREN

Teyjah McAren was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1954. After graduating from Concordia University she travelled throughout Canada and the United States. A restless spirit by nature she was finally captivated by the majesty and beauty of British Columbia's forests and mountains. It was during this period that Teyjah discovered a compelling interest in art and travelling.
After obtaining a teaching certificate from S.F.U. in 1985, Teyjah began her art career by studying watercolours with a variety of artists. Her teachers include: Donna Baspaly, Gerald Brommer, Maxine Masterfield, Mary Todd-Beam, Frank Webb, MaryAnn Beckwith, and Carla O'Connor. Teyjah became interested in acrylics after a chance meeting with the Director of the Working Artist Program for Golden Artist Colors, Patti Brady and a workshop with Mary Todd-Beam. Teyjah completed her Masters in Art Education in 1997 at Simon Fraser University. She is currently lecturing, demonstrating, and doing workshops for Golden Artist Colors for their “Working Artist Program”.
Teyjah is an eclectic painter whose paintings denote a fondness for color and experimentation. Her wide variety of painting styles reflect her inquisitive nature and her ongoing fascination with color, line, and texture. Painting in a variety of styles and medium enables her to best capture what she terms “fleeting moments in time” or “story maps”.
Teyjah’s watercolors, acrylic, pastel, collage, or mixed media paintings vary in subject matter from close-up florals to whimsical landscapes to abstracts. In each work she tries to take advantage of visual opposites whether they be color, shapes, or textures. To express these, she may use warm against cool colors, simple or maze-like shapes, highly textured or subtle surface treatments. Choosing various medium allows her to portray and exemplify the subtleties of a subject and make the most of opposing compositional relationships at the same time.
Teyjah’s work has been featured in a variety of exhibitions including Richmond Art Centre, Robson Square Media Centre, and Place des Arts. Her work is represented in private collections and offices in Quebec and British Columbia.
